Isn’t this sunny weather a treat?
Now I’m planning an article for the ‘Just back‘ telegraph competition. Mostly they like exotic places like a cruise telling of the Northern Lights, or hiking through the Sahara Desert, but lots are in this country as well, so if you’ve been anywhere or setting off somewhere nice, keep it in mind.
Most of you will recognise Sir Frances Drake’s ship there in the harbour. You can see all the treasures he brought back from his travels, like rubies, diamonds and gold. Over twelve million pounds worth. Then he was knighted; he was in fact a pirate. No wonder the Spanish sent their ships after him.
A lot of Belgian people landed in Torbay in 1940 during the war. Now I know where Agatha Christie got her inspiration for the Belgian Detective.
Here’s my co-pirate.
Good Luck with ‘Just Back’, Susan. I’ve tried a couple of times with no success. I think the trick is to find an unusual angle and then it doesn’t matter whether the destination is exotic or mundane.
I agree Sally. I’ve tried before as well. I’ve got a great unusual angle this time. I think so anyway, just finished just back. Just going to type it up tomorrow. Thanks for the luck, I need it. Will let you know.
This is something I’ve been meaning to do for a while, Susan – I agree with Sally, there has to be an original angle.
Good luck if you have a go Wendy. Just sent mine in now. Fingers crossed.
Lovely photos, Suzy. I’ve only tried that market once so far. And yes, that was indeed how A Christie got the inspiration for Poirot, as she watched some Belgian evacuees get off a bus!
Fancy that Rosemary… They say ‘write what you know’ don’t they?
Good luck with Just Back! I love the pictures – I would love to go on that boat 🙂 x
Thanks Teresa, it’s fabulous isn’t it? We went on a ferry across the bay as well, got splashed to bits but great fun.xx
Good luck with Telegraph competition – I think the prize is worth winning too. Hope you did your best pirate impression…
Ohhh arrr by shiver me timbers I did Tracy. Well done on your winning lately, you could write a book on winning competitions by now.
Good luck with the article! Every place is exotic to people who have never been there, and I do think that the best travel articles are those that include interesting little facts that aren’t mentioned in the ‘official’ travel guides.
So True Linda, there’s always something new to find isn’t there. Thanks for the luck.
